2010 - 2011

Once again we have an eclectic, energetic, lay-led, community-oriented, year of church services, drama, fund-raising, and fun planned for the year ahead. St. Luke’s experiences God in our midst in a variety of ways, from a variety of perspectives. But in this diversity we have unity of purpose when it comes to understanding our mission in our local and global community.
Sacred stories will be our theme of our upcoming year. In my four previous years of service to and with St. Luke’s we maintained themes like outreach, discernment, transformation and community. All yielded startling and enriching insight from the Spirit, insights we carry forward into this new year.
We will live out our sacred stories in a unique way this year with the aid of a new drama group headed by our own Elaine Forhan. Once a month Elaine will gather all interested people, of all ages, in the upper hall to find ways to dramatize the scripture for the day, 30 minutes before church. At our 10 am, on those Sundays, we will see our sacred stories made alive! In addition every Tuesday night I will facilitate a Bible study looking at the text for the coming Sunday, giving all gathered input into the sermon for that week.
We are gifted to have an enthused band of believers here at St. Luke’s. Our faith is rooted in being in and with our surrounding community, which is one of the main reasons we renovated our building to make it the largest community meeting space outside the St. Margaret’s Centre. That is why we attract such diverse user groups, large and small, and why community forums are always held here.
We believe that when Jesus said, “love your neighbour as you love yourself” he meant it. We also believe that the Book of Acts spells out how a community of faith should live together, be together, worship together.
I hope you come and experience community with us. There will be an alternative contemplative worship experience on the third Sunday of the month. Our whole congregation will present the musical “Stone Soup” the first weekend of December, and our hugely successful community Vacation Bible Study will be back in July 2011. The VBS for 2010, which focused on the sacredness of water, attracted 59 children and youth from our community.
St. Luke’s is a place that welcomes, discerns and lives out the sacred stories of faith.
God bless you all.
